So I have posted several times about my desire to have a rug in our bedroom (
here,
here, and
here). I think we are probably going to pick something pretty soon (just in time for summer). I am still hanging on to the fact that I want to put an reindeer skin next to my side of the bed (my fiance thinks it is horrible). Reindeer herding is a big part of the Sami Culture and they use every part of the animal, so I think of it as supporting the traditional way of life for my ancestors (my mitochondrial DNA points to Sami origins).
What do you think? Good idea or bad? Try not to think about
the reindeer I met at Christmas...
While I think having this rug in your bedroom would be a bit weird, the Samis are definitely hurting, and more so with climate change. (A friend who spent several months in Mongolia last summer, including some time with reindeer herders, gave the thumbs up on your purchase, purely as an economic development/cultural preservation argument, which I'm very sympathetic to.)
ReplyDeleteIf you lived in Norway or Ulan Bator that'd be one thing, but what about the emissions getting the rug here? (I guess the same goes for a real Persian rug or anything manufactured in China....)
I'm with the fiance on this one, but I wouldn't hold it against you if you really thought it was your best choice.
I think I am out of luck on this one - I will have to just love from afar (across the ocean). Thanks for the detailed note though! Very interesting that you have a friend that worked in Mongolia!
